CHESTNUT APPEAL FOR PROSTATE CANCER PLYMOUTH DEVON CORNWALL SOUTH WEST UK

Prostate Steering Group (PSG)

21st July 2010

The PSG normally meets at the Chestnut Unit of Derriford Hospital on the second Monday of each month.
Additionally, members routinely attend the meetings of the Derriford Prostate Support Group held on the last Thursday of each month.

We are pleased to offer membership of the PSG to any person (male or female) of adult age who feels able to support the goals of the PSG. If you are interested in joining the Group or finding out more about the Group's activities, please contact Vanessa.Wilcox@phnt.swest.nhs.uk or contact a member at one of the Derriford Prostate Support Group meetings

To help meet the number one objective of increasing public awareness of the symptoms and risks of prostate cancer, members of the group are available to give informative presentations and talks about several aspects of the disease to clubs, societies, institutions, etc. in the Derriford Hospital Catchment area which covers South East Cornwall and South West Devon.

The purpose of the presentation is to provide greater awareness of the symptoms and risks of prostate cancer, a disease diagnosed in 35,000 men and which kills around 10,000 men each year in the UK.
Contrary to belief, the presentation also aims to dispel the myth that prostate cancer is only an old man’s disease.
The presentation will also cover ways in which prostate cancer can be prevented and the reasons why so many men are ignorant of the symptoms and risks.
Also, information will be provided on how men can take control of their own screening programme (in the absence of a national screening programme like there is for breast and cervical cancer in women) and also the important role women can play in matters that affect a man’s health.
The presentation will mention how people can help with the greater awareness of the symptoms and risks of prostate cancer.
The duration of the presentation is approximately 20 minutes allowing 10 minutes for questions and answers.
